White Entropy

White Entropy is Jacopo Di Cera’s new project exploring the fragile and ever-changing relationship between human beings and the Alpine landscape.

Through zenithal images of Italy’s mountain ranges and an immersive installation that invites visitors to walk across the bed of a glacier, the exhibition reverses the point of view: it is no longer us observing the mountain, but the mountain observing us, silently witnessing our presence and its impact on the environment.

White Entropy is conceived as a profound reflection on the current state of Alpine landscapes and on the role humans play in their transformation. With his characteristic aerial, top-down perspective, Jacopo Di Cera captures the mountain from above, revealing its forms, lines and the marks that time and human intervention have left on its surface. The white of snow—symbol of purity, silence and apparent stillness—becomes the starting point for a visual investigation in which nature is not a backdrop to be admired but a living organism that records and reveals change.

The concept of “entropy” guides the entire project: the physical measure of transformation and loss, but also a metaphor for our era, in which environmental balances are shifting at an increasingly rapid pace. The aerial photographs taken by the artist across Italy’s major mountain chains—from Mont Blanc to the Alpe di Siusi, from the Dolomites to the Abruzzo Apennines—show landscapes that have shaped themselves autonomously for millennia, now visibly marked by human activity.

At the heart of the exhibition is a site-specific installation inviting visitors to walk across a large-scale print of the Mont Blanc glacier bed. Each step alters the image, staging a simple yet powerful gesture: what disappears beneath our feet mirrors what we are consuming in the real world. The experience thus becomes physical, direct and inescapable. The audience is encouraged to perceive the landscape not as something distant but as something that reacts to our presence.

Set within Milan Malpensa Airport—a place of movement, haste and distraction— White Entropy creates a moment of suspension, an interval of awareness. The zenithal viewpoint—detached, meditative, precise—becomes a tool for deepening our gaze and prompting reflection on our role in the climate crisis. The inverted mountain is no longer merely a landscape: it becomes an eye, a witness, a repository of memory.

With this project, Jacopo Di Cera continues his artistic exploration of social and environmental themes, blending photography, materiality and narrative to propose a broader reflection on how we inhabit the world and on the traces we inevitably leave behind.
