David LaChapelle – The Second Coming – 2025

The Second Coming is a monumental photograph created by David LaChapelle in 2025 and presented in world premiere by Deodato Arte. The work stands as one of the most ambitious and complex achievements of the American artist and belongs to the spiritual thread that has run through his practice from the early 2000s to the present day.

With The Second Coming, LaChapelle offers a contemporary vision of the Second Coming, one of the most powerful and deeply rooted subjects in Western iconographic tradition. The artist approaches the theme of Judgment not as a dogmatic event, but as a universal experience, capable of prompting reflection on responsibility, redemption, and moral awareness.

The work was developed in collaboration with Deodato Arte and its founder, Deodato Salafia, whose theological background encouraged LaChapelle to pursue a research path focused on the representation of the sacred through the photographic medium, with the stated aim of “photographing the impossible.”

Composition and reference to tradition

Inspired by Michelangelo’s frescoes in the Sistine Chapel, particularly The Last Judgment, The Second Coming unfolds as a grand photographic tableau with a circular composition. At the center of the scene emerge the figures of Jesus and Mary, the visual and symbolic core of the work, around which numerous suspended bodies are arranged, captured in movements that evoke ascent, fall, ожидание and revelation.

The photograph is taken from above, a recurring technique in LaChapelle’s practice, allowing him to challenge gravity while recalling perspectival solutions typical of Renaissance art. The figures are arranged on multiple physical levels, creating an amplified sense of depth and scale, in which each character assumes a precise role within the visual narrative.

The color palette, built around pastel tones and luminous gradations, guides the viewer’s gaze across the entire surface of the work, reinforcing the suspended and theatrical dimension of the scene.

A photographic work against digital artificiality

Despite presenting an apparently supernatural vision, The Second Coming strongly asserts its photographic nature. LaChapelle deliberately chooses to leave visible elements of the studio: the edges of the backdrop, the floor, and traces of previous setups. These details interrupt the illusion and return the image to its real, physical dimension.

In an era dominated by digital aesthetics and artificial intelligence, this choice takes on a precise conceptual value: the work, however visionary, is the result of a constructed set, real bodies, and a concrete staging. Photography thus becomes an instrument of truth, even when addressing the invisible.

Meaning and interpretation of The Second Coming

Although rooted in Christian iconography, The Second Coming does not address a specific faith. The meaning of the work remains deliberately open and universal. Judgment is not presented as condemnation, but as a moment of revelation and the possibility of transformation.

LaChapelle invites viewers to confront their own position within the composition: each figure represents a state of the human condition, a phase of the spiritual journey, a tension between fall and salvation. In this sense, the work does not impose a single reading, but encourages a personal and introspective experience.

The Second Coming within David LaChapelle’s practice

The work continues a trajectory established by some of LaChapelle’s most significant spiritually oriented projects, such as Jesus Is My Homeboy (2003), Deluge (2006), and Stations of the Cross (2023). While Deluge reflected on the collapse of contemporary civilization, The Second Coming shifts its focus toward the possibility of redemption and hope, responding to the cynicism and disillusionment of the present.

With this work, David LaChapelle reaffirms his role as one of the most recognizable and visionary figures in contemporary photography, capable of merging tradition, spectacle, and spiritual reflection into images of powerful emotional and symbolic impact.
