THE ARTWORK

-

This splendid etching was created for the book "Georges Braque" by Carl Einstein and was published in 1934 by Chroniques du Jour, Paris and A. Zwemmer, London and E.Weyne, New York. Carl Einstein (26 April 1885, 5 July 1940) was an influential German Jewish writer, historian and critic of art. Considered one of the first critics that appreciated the development of Cubism and its work on African art and its influences on the European avant-garde, Einstein was friend and colleague of importatnti figures such as George Grosz, Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso and Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler.

This splendid etching represents the dance through a whirlwind of black lines that interwine without a beginning and an end as the various movements performed by a dancer, represented by a stylized face above the tangle of lines. The work is published on the raisonné catalogue of Geoges Braque of Dora Vallier.
