Kiss after Klimt is a screen print on paper by Tomoko Nagao, issued in a limited edition of 99 copies, measuring 70 × 70 cm. The work belongs to the most recognizable strand of the artist’s production, dedicated to the reinterpretation of major masterpieces from art history through a pop, decorative, and strongly contemporary visual language.

The direct reference is The Kiss by Gustav Klimt, an absolute icon of Symbolism and Art Nouveau. Nagao adopts its intimate and vertical composition, with the two figures wrapped in a suspended, timeless embrace, preserving the centrality of the amorous gesture. However, Klimt’s solemn golden atmosphere is transformed into an extremely vibrant visual surface, constructed through a multitude of patterns, bright colors, and repeated graphic details.

The garments of the two lovers become a mosaic of ornamental motifs, geometries, textures, and symbols that recall both Klimtian decoration and the kawaii aesthetic and visual world of Japanese pop culture. Insects, stylized flowers, and small animated elements populate the entire composition, dissolving the boundary between figure and background and creating an immersive, densely decorative effect.

The faces, simplified and devoid of realistic features, give the figures a universal and timeless character, distancing them from the original sensual dimension and moving toward a more conceptual and contemporary interpretation. The screen-printing technique emphasizes repetition and seriality, central aspects of Nagao’s practice, which reflects on the reproducibility of images and the transformation of historical masterpieces into global cultural icons.

With Kiss after Klimt, Tomoko Nagao offers a reinterpretation that is both ironic and respectful of one of the most celebrated symbols of love in Western art. Tomoko Nagao: artworks and biography of the artist

Tomoko Nagao is one of the main contemporary artists of Micropop art. Born in 1976 in Nagoya, Japan, where she studied the stylised forms of Nara Yoshitomo and the Superflat style of Takashi Murakami. Today she is considered the most important exponent of Micropop and Superflat in Italy, where she now lives.

Tomoko draws inspiration from the works of Caravaggio, Velázquez, Tiziano, La Tour, Botticelli, Hokusaiand revisits them by presenting global brands such as Coca-Cola, iPad, Barilla, Play Station PSP. The adaptation of the classic paintings of the great masters by Tomoko Nagao is meant to be ironic towards the economic mechanisms of art, as it aims to bring Renaissance patrons, such as the Medici, and the creative directors of big brands onto the same level.

In this way, his works become a metaphor for globalisation, making them more "easy to read" thanks to the Japanese aesthetic concept of "Kawaii" that makes everything "cool". His production includes original paintings, stencils and vectorial art. She practices the Superflat style, the Japanese postmodern art movement founded by Takashi Murakami, which characterises her artistic production.

Tomoko's innovative and original art

The works by Tomoko Nagao are full of flat, emphatic images with defined contours. Her art is innovative and original, combining at the same time classical and contemporary art, Eastern traditions and Western culture. He chooses classic subjects from the history of art that are world-famous and instantly recognisable and revisits them in a Pop key and with elements of Japanese Manga and Ukiyo-e culture. One of the best examples of this is the Mickey Mouse wearing Armani underwear.

In September 2015 his work Botticelli - The Birth of Venus with Baci was exhibited at the Gemalde Galeriein Berlin and, in 2016, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London on the occasion of The Botticelli Renaissance group show, considered by critics to be one of the most interesting events of that year.

The artwork will be packed with rigid supports that will protect it from potential damage during transportation. It does not require a wooden box and delivery to EU countries takes 2-5 business days.

If you live in Europe (CEE) the price we show you already includes taxes. The works are taxed either with VAT exposed (5%) or VAT with the margin, if you are a private person you do not change anything, if you are a company: in In the first case, you will recover the VAT, in the second, no. When you put the works in the cart you will be separated from the vat exposed.

If you DON'T LIVE IN EU and you want an EXTRA EU shipping

Many works (not all) have an exposed VAT of 5% included in the price, this vat will be spun off! Obviously you will pay the VAT to your destination country, if due. For example if you live in Switzerland you save 5% but you will have to pay 8.1% to your customs, if you live in Hong Kong you will save 5% and you will not have to pay anything to your customs (lucky you).
