Primavera after Botticelli with Alitalia and kitten is a screen print on paper created by Tomoko Nagao in 2025, issued in a limited edition of 100 copies, measuring 100 × 70 cm. The work fully embodies the research of the Japanese artist, who is known for her reinterpretation of Western art through the lens of contemporary pop language and global visual culture.

The composition clearly recalls Sandro Botticelli’s famous Primavera, preserving its narrative structure and the arrangement of its mythological figures. Venus, the Three Graces, Flora, and the other iconic characters are reinterpreted by Nagao through an essential and stylized graphic language, characterized by simplified faces and clean outlines, which flatten the Renaissance pictorial depth in favor of a decorative, two-dimensional surface.

The natural landscape is transformed into a dense and saturated visual space, populated by repeated patterns, insects, flowers, and bright colors. Within this setting appear explicitly contemporary elements, such as Alitalia airplanes crossing the scene and a small kitten—ironic insertions that disrupt the classical harmony of the original work and introduce a reflection on image consumption, globalization, and the transformation of cultural symbols into pop icons.

The screen-printing technique emphasizes seriality and reproducibility, central themes in Nagao’s practice, which brings into dialogue high art and mass culture, past and present. The result is an image that is seductive and immediately engaging, yet at the same time layered, in which the Renaissance masterpiece is reinterpreted as a contemporary cultural product open to new readings.

Tomoko Nagao: artworks and biography of the artist

Tomoko Nagao is one of the main contemporary artists of Micropop art. Born in 1976 in Nagoya, Japan, where she studied the stylised forms of Nara Yoshitomo and the Superflat style of Takashi Murakami. Today she is considered the most important exponent of Micropop and Superflat in Italy, where she now lives.

Tomoko draws inspiration from the works of Caravaggio, Velázquez, Tiziano, La Tour, Botticelli, Hokusaiand revisits them by presenting global brands such as Coca-Cola, iPad, Barilla, Play Station PSP. The adaptation of the classic paintings of the great masters by Tomoko Nagao is meant to be ironic towards the economic mechanisms of art, as it aims to bring Renaissance patrons, such as the Medici, and the creative directors of big brands onto the same level.

In this way, his works become a metaphor for globalisation, making them more "easy to read" thanks to the Japanese aesthetic concept of "Kawaii" that makes everything "cool". His production includes original paintings, stencils and vectorial art. She practices the Superflat style, the Japanese postmodern art movement founded by Takashi Murakami, which characterises her artistic production.

Tomoko's innovative and original art

The works by Tomoko Nagao are full of flat, emphatic images with defined contours. Her art is innovative and original, combining at the same time classical and contemporary art, Eastern traditions and Western culture. He chooses classic subjects from the history of art that are world-famous and instantly recognisable and revisits them in a Pop key and with elements of Japanese Manga and Ukiyo-e culture. One of the best examples of this is the Mickey Mouse wearing Armani underwear.

In September 2015 his work Botticelli - The Birth of Venus with Baci was exhibited at the Gemalde Galeriein Berlin and, in 2016, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London on the occasion of The Botticelli Renaissance group show, considered by critics to be one of the most interesting events of that year.

The artwork will be packed with rigid supports that will protect it from potential damage during transportation. It does not require a wooden box and delivery to EU countries takes 2-5 business days.

If you DON'T LIVE IN EU and you want an EXTRA EU shipping

Many works (not all) have an exposed VAT of 5% included in the price, this vat will be spun off! Obviously you will pay the VAT to your destination country, if due. For example if you live in Switzerland you save 5% but you will have to pay 8.1% to your customs, if you live in Hong Kong you will save 5% and you will not have to pay anything to your customs (lucky you).
