THE ARTWORK

-

The work that is represented here is one of five large-scale studio interior paintings presented in a series done between 1973 and 1974 by Lichtenstein. The series refers to some Matisse's works, specially "L'Atelier Rouge" (The Red Studio). Lichtenstein's work, besides from drawing inspiration from masterpieces of the history of arts, incorporates works of the artist himself, creating a retrospective work. The most evident auto-reference on the work is the painting on the back that shows "Look Mickey" presented by Lichtenstein by 1961. Other references can be found in the phone, the fruit or the mirror. The presence of Lichtenstein works on the painting could make you think that it is a simplified representation of the artist's studio, but the references to the history of arts makes you understand that is an ideal representation of how the studio of an artist should be.

Lichtenstein's approach in this work it's not traditional, since it's not common to find works where the artists self-quote without introducing changes to their work; his pieces were revisited as perfect duplicates. Lichtenstein appreciates the quality of his previous works and creates an interesting combination of styles that can work both as single paintings and as a one.
