THE ARTWORK

-

Andy Warhol, Flowers – FS II.113, 1974

The subject of Flowers – FS II.113 is represented by a single hibiscus flower, outlined with a bold black line and accompanied by a dynamic graphic mark that crosses the composition. The flower, rendered with intense color fields, stands out against a neutral background, emphasizing the flatness and formal synthesis that characterize the entire Flowers series.

The work is a hand-colored screenprint using Dr. Martin’s aniline watercolor dyes on paper, produced in an edition of 250 copies (64/250). It is signed and numbered by the artist. The dimensions (103.8 × 69.2 cm) give the image a strong visual presence, while the hand-applied aniline dyes introduce subtle color variations, making each copy unique within the edition.

The Flowers series, first presented in 1964 at Leo Castelli Gallery in New York, marks a significant moment in Warhol’s production. Starting from a photograph published in Modern Photography, the artist translates the natural subject into the language of screenprinting, eliminating depth and volume to transform the flower into a flat, repeatable image.

In this 1974 version, the use of aniline dyes enhances color brightness and saturation, highlighting the tension between mechanical process and direct intervention. The work fully reflects Warhol’s exploration of seriality, authorship, and the relationship between art and reproduction.
