THE ARTWORK

-

Andy Warhol, Flowers – II.117, 1974

The subject of Flowers – II.117 is represented by a single hibiscus flower, placed at the center of the composition and defined by a strong graphic line. The flower, characterized by an intense pink fill, emerges from a minimalist vase outlined with rapid, overlapping black strokes. A broad curvilinear gesture, also in pink tones, traverses the surrounding space, introducing a dynamic element that interacts with the vertical structure of the vase.

The work is a hand-colored screenprint using Dr. Martin’s aniline watercolor dyes on paper, produced in an edition of 250 copies (205/250). It is signed in pencil on the verso and bears the initials in pencil at the lower right. The dimensions (103.8 × 69.2 cm) give the image a strong presence, while the hand-applied aniline dyes intensify the chromatic brilliance and make each copy slightly unique, yet preserving the serial structure.

As with the other works in the Flowers series, Warhol reworks a photographic image published in 1964 in Modern Photography, translating it into the language of screenprinting. With this series, first presented in 1964 at Leo Castelli Gallery in New York, the artist temporarily moves away from portraits of media icons to focus on a natural subject, while maintaining the principles of repetition and formal reduction.

In this 1974 version, the use of aniline dyes emphasizes the gestural and experimental component of the work. The contrast between the incisive black line and the fluid color application highlights the tension between mechanical process and direct artistic intervention, a central theme in Warhol’s reflection on authorship and image reproducibility.
