THE ARTWORK

Andy Warhol, Flowers – II.116, 1974

The subject of the screenprint Flowers – II.116 consists of two large hibiscus blossoms, outlined through an essential graphic line and subsequently enhanced with hand-applied watercolor. In this 1974 version, Warhol revisits one of the most iconic themes of his production, isolating the floral subject against a neutral background and emphasizing its two-dimensionality through the contrast between the black printed line and the pink and green areas applied by hand.

The work is a hand-colored screenprint with watercolor on white wove paper, produced in an edition of 250 impressions (238/250) and signed in pencil on the verso. The significant dimensions (103.8 × 69.2 cm) give the subject a monumental presence, while the manual intervention introduces a unique variation within the edition, highlighting the dialogue between mechanical reproducibility and individual gesture, a central element in the artist’s practice.

With the Flowers series, Warhol temporarily distances himself from portraits of celebrities and icons of American consumerism to engage with a subject drawn from the natural world. The image derives from a photograph published in 1964 in the magazine “Modern Photography”, which the artist reworked through the silkscreen process, eliminating spatial depth and transforming the flower into a pure surface. The series was first presented in 1964 at the gallery of Leo Castelli in New York, marking a significant moment in his artistic development.

In this 1974 edition, the use of hand-applied watercolor enhances the experimental dimension of the work: while maintaining a strong decorative quality, the flower becomes a field of investigation into color, seriality, and authorship. The artist’s direct intervention interrupts the total uniformity of the serial print, while preserving the clear and immediately recognizable compositional structure that characterizes Warhol’s visual language.
