White Entropy by Jacopo Di Cera on view at Milan Malpensa: the mountain’s gaze upon mankind

From December 4, 2025 to March 31, 2026, the PhotoSquare exhibition space at Milan Malpensa Airport hosts White Entropy, a new solo show by Jacopo Di Cera, curated by Massimo Ciampa. The initiative, part of the official program of the Milano Cortina 2026 Cultural Olympiad, offers a visual and site-specific journey focused on the mountain—not as a goal to conquer, but as a fragile, observing presence.

The exhibition unfolds as a journey into the relationship between humankind and the alpine landscape, where photography and environmental reflection merge into an urgent and profound dialogue.

The mountain upside down: a zenithal gaze on our time

With White Entropy, Jacopo Di Cera continues his artistic and social exploration, marked by his use of aerial (zenithal) photography and a poetic approach that moves between documentation and abstraction. Di Cera offers an unexpected reading of the mountain, arising from the meeting of two opposing yet complementary forces: white, as a symbol of purity, silence and apparent stillness; and entropy, as a physical principle and metaphor of time, loss and transformation.

In the project presented at Malpensa, the artist focuses his lens on Italy’s snow-covered peaks – from Mont Blanc to the Alpe di Siusi, from the Dolomites to Roccaraso – revealing how the landscape is gradually reshaped by human activity. Through his aerial images, Di Cera captures this transformation: from untouched terrain shaped only by wind and time, to a surface marked and consumed by human presence.

A site-specific installation: the glacier beneath our feet

At the heart of the exhibition is a striking site-specific installation. Visitors are invited to walk across a large photographic print of the Mont Blanc glacier bed, laid out on the floor.

Each step taken across the surface alters the image—an immediate metaphor for how our everyday actions contribute to the erosion of natural ecosystems.

In a symbolic reversal, it is no longer us looking at the mountain, but the mountain that observes us, silently bearing witness to our impact.

A pause for meaning in a place of transit

In the bustling, distracted setting of an airport - symbol of speed and transience - White Entropy imposes a suspension of time. Di Cera’s zenithal gaze becomes a tool for regaining visual depth, turning a place of passage into a place of awareness.

The exhibition invites reflection, where the whiteness of snow—traditionally a symbol of silence and stillness—becomes charged with meaning, linked to transformation and disappearance. Each visitor is called to question their own role and the trace they leave behind, in an invitation to look more consciously at the world we inhabit.

Jacopo Di Cera: a journey through image, memory, and landscape

Born in Milan in 1981, Jacopo Di Cera turned to photography after a career in communication, developing a personal visual language that blends image and material, with a strong focus on social and environmental themes.

Among his most notable projects are Fino alla Fine del Mare, dedicated to the migrant boats of Lampedusa, and Sospesi, a reflection on human relationships seen from above.

With White Entropy, the artist continues his investigation into climate change, already addressed in his installation Retreat at the 2025 Dubai Art Fair.

To complement the Malpensa project, Di Cera will also present a solo exhibition at the main Deodato Arte gallery in January 2026, offering the public further insight into his poetic vision and latest visual research.
