Andy Warhol - Marilyn 11.22 – After the Edition

This screenprint, Marilyn 11.22 – After the Edition, is part of the vast visual universe surrounding the figure of Marilyn Monroe, one of the central icons of Andy Warhol’s work. The image unmistakably refers to the series of portraits of the American diva that Warhol created starting in 1962, after her death. This square-format, signed version reflects the artist’s graphic and conceptual language.

The composition, centered on a frontal close-up, adopts the famous Pop color scheme: artificial, saturated, and dissonant colors that eliminate all naturalism. The effect is that of a duplicated, flat, two-dimensional icon in which the celebrity is transformed into a visual brand. The use of screen printing reinforces this sense of seriality, removing the artist’s subjective intervention and aligning with Warhol’s view of art as an industrial process.

Andy Warhol - After the Edition

The work is originally signed on the back by Andy Warhol and bears the phrase “this is not by me, Andy Warhol.”

In 1970, the well-known Belgian print studio Sunday B. Morning, founded by friends of Warhol, decided to publish a reprint for the European market of the first “Marilyn” series, which had recently enjoyed tremendous international success.
Warhol refused to collaborate, but Sunday B. Morning proceeded anyway, stamping the back of the works with: “Published by Sunday B. Morning” and “Fill in your own signature.”

Faced with this initiative—and thanks to the strong friendship that tied him to the founders of the print studio—Warhol decided in the 1970s to sign the backs of some of these prints with the ironic phrase “This is not by me, Andy Warhol,” a humorous reference to authorship and authenticity. In the 1980s, he went on to create a similar series aimed at the European market.
