Andy Warhol - Marilyn 11.31 – After the Edition

This screen print, Marilyn 11.31 – This is not by me, belongs to the vast visual universe revolving around the figure of Marilyn Monroe, one of the central icons in Andy Warhol’s body of work. The image unmistakably recalls the series of portraits of the American diva that Warhol developed starting in 1962, following her death. This square-format, signed version reflects the artist’s graphic and conceptual language.

The composition, focused on a frontal close-up, adopts Warhol’s famous Pop color scheme: artificial, saturated, and dissonant colors—in this case, a fuchsia background, bright yellow hair, and fluorescent pink eyeshadow—that completely eliminate any naturalism. The result is that of a duplicated, flat, two-dimensional icon, in which celebrity is transformed into a visual brand. The screen-printing technique reinforces this sense of seriality, removing any subjective artistic intervention and aligning with Warhol’s philosophy of art as an industrial process.

Andy Warhol - After the Edition

The artwork is hand-signed on the back by Andy Warhol and marked with the phrase "this is not by me, Andy Warhol."

In 1970, the renowned Belgian print studio Sunday B. Morning, founded by some of Warhol’s friends, decided to launch a European reprint of the first Marilyn series, which had just achieved tremendous international success.

Warhol refused to collaborate, but Sunday B. Morning proceeded with the production anyway, placing a stamp on the back reading: “Published by Sunday B. Morning” and “Fill in your own signature.”

In response to this bold move—and given the close friendship with the studio's founders—Warhol decided in the 1970s to sign some of these works on the back with the phrase “This is not by me, Andy Warhol”, an ironic commentary on authorship and authenticity. Later, in the 1980s, he went on to create a similar series for the European market.
