THE ARTWORK

-

Particular work dominated by a character dressed in green and similar to a skull. The yellow eye without the pupil and the uncovered teeth make the air of this suffering and disquieting presence: it could be a reference to the title, which was titled by Basquiat "Because it hurts the lungs".

The pop art of the Afro-American artist is very different from that of Andy Warhol, who portrayed stars and exalted mass society and consumption; Basquiat's art comes instead from the street and wants to denounce its brutality and violence. This denunciation is expressed through a hard and etched style, graffiti, derived precisely from graffiti and African art. The market appropriated the works of Basquiat, which were also sold to considerable numbers, but emptied of their significance. Probably this misunderstanding caused in the artist the definitive collapse, coming to die at only 27 years because of a cocktail of drugs, which he had always abused.

The work was printed for opening night exhibition "Jean-Michel Basquiat: New Works" at the Akira Ikeda Gallery, Tokyo, Japan (the exhibition took place from 7 to 28 February 1987).
