Jean-Michel Basquiat – Culebra Suite (1981)

The works Untitled (Reclining Figure), Untitled (Standing Figure), and Untitled (Mira Pa Ya), executed in 1981 in graphite on paper, form a unified group known as the Culebra Suite. The three drawings were created during Jean-Michel Basquiat’s stay between Puerto Rico and the island of Culebra, a brief yet crucial phase of his early production, characterized by a direct, intense, and unmediated graphic practice.

In Untitled (Reclining Figure), the reclining body stretches horizontally across the sheet and is constructed through a nervous, broken line, with overlapping strokes that generate constant visual tension. The face is reduced to a few incisive marks, while the hands and limbs assume irregular proportions, heightening the expressive force of the image.

In Untitled (Standing Figure), the upright figure is defined by a continuous yet unstable line; the open posture, with spread legs and bent arms, creates a tense bodily presence, built more on the energy of gesture than on coherent anatomical construction.

In Untitled (Mira Pa Ya), the scene revolves around two figures placed in relation to one another: one frontal and simplified, accompanied by a speech bubble, and the other rendered with a more mobile line; the dialogue between mark, body, and word introduces an immediate narrative dimension and an explicitly erotic register, direct and unfiltered.

The three works share the same dimensions and reveal a significant procedural element: Untitled (Reclining Figure) is the only one bearing Basquiat’s autograph signature, while the other two display the imprint of the signature, indicating that the sheets were overlapped during execution. This detail suggests that they were conceived together, likely within a single session, as part of a unified creative flow.

The provenance and documentation further consolidate the historical importance of the group: preserved since the 1990s in an important Italian collection, the works are accompanied by certificates from the Basquiat Committee signed by Gerard Basquiat, as well as period slides bearing the labels of the Annina Nosei Gallery, a gallery that played a decisive role in the artist’s early career. Taken together, the three works constitute a compact and coherent testimony to the most instinctive and radical phase of Basquiat’s practice in 1981.
