THE ARTWORK

-

Basquiat, Andy Warhol and Francesco Clemente collaborated on a series of paintings under the aegis of Bruno Bischofberger between 1983 and 1985, of which this splendid work is part. On a uniform blue background a red African mask stands out, while 3 figures of men from the shoulders move away from the foreground towards the background. The left part is intereably occupied by a black grid of lines that looks almost like a cage, while on the right the writing is framed by the word Water.

In this work we can notice the characteristic features of Basquiat's style: strong colors without shadings, subjects derived from African art and graffiti, from the almost childish trait: a very different pop art from the one that portrayed the stars and objects of the consumer society of his friend Andy Warhol.

It was published by Kestner-Gesellschaft and printed in Hannover by Frenzel & Heinrichs.
