Jean Michel-Basquiat - Black

The artwork by Jean Michel-Basquiat, Black is hand-signed and is a lithograph dated 1986.

Black was released on the opening night of the exhibition 'Jean-Michel Basquiat: New Works' held from 7 to 28 February 1987 at the Akira Ikeda Gallery in Tokyo, Japan.

Basquiat's art comes from the street and wants to denounce its brutality and violence. Stylistically, this denunciation is expressed through a harsh, engraved, graffiti style derived from graffiti art and African art.

The work also features the iconic symbol of the artist Basquiat: the crown, a sort of evocation of power that will become an artistic signature. Friend and colleague Francesco Clemente explains that: "Jean-Michel's crown has three points, because it represents the three professions of the artist: of poet, musician and boxing champion".

The artwork by Jean Michel-Basquiat, Black measures 27x21 cm.
